The book of Judges May 16, 2010

The book of Judges in the old testament appears to be a book of defeat. The land was full of unbelief and in decline. Committment to the Lord was so poor that on many occasions throughout this period sin was to be tolerated rather than avoided. Worship of idols such as Baal and Ashtoreth becomes a common theme throughout this book.

The role of Judges mentioned here is not the usual one we now associate with this title, i.e. executing justice according to written or oral laws, but rather their role was to restore righteousness and apply it to every day life. Despite these judges’ attempts to restore righteousness, the people of Israel ultimately chose a life of sin. I encourage you to read this book with the powerpoint attatched to help bring this book to life.
