Pope Shenouda March 18, 2012

Just yesterday, His Holiness Pope Shenouda, Patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church passed away at the age of 88. He was the Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church for just over 40 years.

There are countless positive qualities that His Holiness demonstrated throughout his lifetime. He was a tremendous leader in everything that he did.

For me personally, he was a key figure in helping me to learn about the church and its spirituality. When I first joined the church as a youth, I started to read some of the books published under his name. I can say confidently that every book under his authorship was extremely beneficial for me. When you read his books, and listen to his sermons, you really begin to realise that he is a fantastic theologian.

Books like ‘Life of faith’, ‘Characteristics to the spiritual path’ and ‘the creed’ still stick in my mind. Other books like ‘The release of the spirit’ and ‘Have you seen the one I love?’ are absolute classics and golden treasures.

The more I began to listen and read from him, the greater the connection I felt. In probably all of his books, he gives a preface in which he states the goal of the book for you personally. He truly cares for every reader (no matter who he is), and it is evident in his authorship.

During this period I really desired to meet him, and I made it one of my dreams. Unfortunately when he came to visit Australia I was not Coptic yet, and due to ailing health he was never able to make a further return trip. I guess I will just have to wait till I get to heaven!

I recall others who have said the unbelievable feeling they had when they interacted with this great man. I have read stories about people who were not Coptic Orthodox (or even Christian for that matter), expressing a feeling that ‘there is something very special to this man, he seems so at peace’.

He has definitely lead the church positively with his wise words of wisdom, and Christian behaviour. He remained calm and at peace, despite the absolute chaos that was around him.

His loss on this planet is huge, and has left a big gap to be filled by the succeeding pope. But for him, he has left this corrupt world for glory and peace. I’m sure that you are feeling a sense of sadness for losing this great man on Earth, but are also feeling a sense of happiness knowing that he has received the entry ticket to heaven. We still have to work hard to make sure we receive this precious ticket….like him.

Daniel,

I wanted to express how absolutely eloquent I found your post today titled “Pope Shenouda” to have been. You really highlighted the great works of this humble, charismatic and peaceful religious patriarch.
Being an American, I have to confess Pope Shenouda III and the dioceses of the Coptic Orthodox Churches are not recognizable. What a shame I find this, since Shenouda III was the bishop of over 200 dioceses in North America alone.
However, this great leader left an impact of nonviolence and a message of piece and unity for Arabs, Muslims and Christians alike. Few Americans, sadly and unfortunately, would know that in 2000, Shenouda III was awarded the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence. These awards are given every two years to prestigious leaders who likened the peaceful resistance of Mahatma Gandhi.
I want to thank you for your enlightening post and opening my mind up to a great religious leader who made a truly peaceful message of difference in today’s world.
I wanted to share with you a video about Shenouda III that I think you will find interesting and supplemental to your coverage of this tragedy. I hope you enjoy it, as I included the link below.

The clip does a great job of concisely sourcing and compiling news reports to emphasize the scope and context the content being reported on. Newsy synthesizes and analyzes news into neutral comprehensive video clips showing a variety of opinions on the story.

I hope you will embed this video into your blog and maybe in the future, we could swap blog roll links and widgets. We cover a number of political (United States and World) topics, as well as religion.
